Press Release: Renewable Energy Directive revisions agreed: specific support for “innovative” renewable energy technologies

Press Release: Renewable Energy Directive revisions agreed: specific support for “innovative” renewable energy technologies

EUREC – the Association of European Renewable Energy Research Centres – welcomes the Council and European Parliament’s adoption of the indicative target that 5% of all new renewable energy capacity to be installed to 2030 should be of innovative renewable energy technology.

The Renewable Energy Directive (RED III), as amended during negotiations between the Swedish Presidency of the EU and MEPs leading on the file in the European Parliament, will boost the deployment of renewable energy, to meet “European Green Deal » and REPowerEU plans. The agreement includes a provision which will increase the share of renewables in the EU’s final energy consumption to 42.5%-45% by 2030. The legislation will also speed up procedures to grant permits for new renewable energy power plants, such as solar panels or windmills, or to adapt existing ones.

Vitally, the RED III agreement also stipulates that Member States set an indicative target for innovative renewable energy technology to account for at least 5% of all renewable energy capacity to be installed to 2030. EUREC applauds the success of all involved to pass this necessary and do-able target, which will speed up the commercialisation of new, high-quality, European-made renewable energy technology. It is significant to Europe’s future in international competitiveness in renewable energy, while still providing Member States with the flexibility to determine which technologies to promote under that target.
