Following a successful joint ETIP event on P2X in November 2024, a second P2X webinar was organised by EUREC alongside ETIP PV, ETIP Wind, and ETIP Ocean – this time focusing on energy islands. The webinar’s theme is on deployment, notably “Are energy islands the first place wind, PV, and P2X come together?”.
Several man-made “energy islands” are being built or in planning, including Belgium’s Princess Elisabeth Island and Denmark’s two islands in Bornholm and the North Sea. While some only mention the generation of electricity from wind, these are areas where P2X could feasibly be deployed. This event took a closer look at energy islands and the offshore technology which could be utilised, and analysed the R&D challenges which come from deploying P2X on energy islands.
The event was a success, with over 150 attendees, and offered insights from industry (offshore solar installations and offshore hydrogen) as well as the research sector. Eloise Couffon from the European Commission (DG Energy) opened the event with an overview of the EU’s regulatory history surrounding energy islands, financial support mechanisms, and regulatory needs for future success. These needs primarily concern ensuring cooperation: strong regional cooperation systems, joint integrated regional planning efforts, and fair cost and benefit sharing. Industry presentations from Oceans of Energy, CorPower Ocean, and Aquaventus highlighted the cost-saving benefits of incorporating hybrid renewable energy systems, particularly as several energy islands currently under construction (Princess Elisabeth and the North Sea Island) are facing delays due to escalating costs. Other benefits of P2X and hybrid systems include covering seasonal shifts in power, lower import dependencies, reduced strain on the energy grid, and increased power output.
Thank you to all of our speakers for their insights!
