ENERGY VISIONS | After Marrakech, how to turn the Paris climate deal into reality?

The Paris climate deal is having something of a roller coaster year. First there was the enthusiasm that greeted the conclusion to last December’s negotiations, then the giddy rush to ratify that succeeded just before the start of this year’s COP22 summit in Morocco. But the mood is souring fast. First, Donald Trump’s unexpected victory in the U.S. presidential election has cast into doubt the U.S. commitment to the agreement; Trump has called climate change a Chinese-inspired hoax and pledged to pull America out of the climate diplomacy process. Then there’s the worry that the commitments made in Paris aren’t nearly enough to meet the summit’s goals of keeping global warming to well below 2 degrees Celsius — a concern that is especially apt considering this year’s freakishly warm winter.
