EUREC submitted input to the European Commission’s public consultation on the Data Union Strategy on 20 July. The input advocated for clear and comprehensive data sharing policies as essential to Europe’s future renewable energy systems. Particularly when it comes to the use of data in Artificial Intelligence (AI), an effective AI ecosystem can only be built using a large pool of trusted data in a common space. This data should be publicly available, disaggregated (but anonymised for privacy concerns), and stored in accessible and scalable data formats.
Applying data-driven digital tools in the form of AI-driven software can optimise O&M strategies and renewable energy plant designs, ultimately driving down the cost of reaching 2030 targets. EUREC further highlighted auctions using non-price criteria as simple yet effective methods of incorporating data-friendly initiatives. Additionally, the Common European Energy Data Space (CEEDS), should be widely utilised as a common data sharing architecture to create a trusted system for data sharing.
Our input was endorsed by EUREC members Fraunhofer ISE and Inavitas, as well as TU Wien.
