EUREC Workshop: support for the European Commission’s hydrogen strategy

EUREC Workshop: support for the European Commission’s hydrogen strategy

On the 1st December 2020 EUREC (Association of European Renewable Energy Research Centres) and DLR (German Aerospace Centre) organised the online workshop ‘The role of green hydrogen for a carbon-neutral Europe’. 180 participants followed the presentations of 18 experts on green hydrogen and the policies to support it, its applications and the challenges that this emerging sector faces.

Our speakers included representatives of public administrations such as the European Commission, EUREC members with significant activity in hydrogen Fraunhofer-IWES, CIEMAT, TÜBITAK, DLR Institute of Networked Energy Systems, ZSW, CNR-ITAE, and DLR Institute for Future Fuels, and other stakeholder groups (Hydrogen Research European EERA Joint Programme on hydrogen and Renewable Hydrogen Coalition -the former Choose Renewable Hydrogen). Please find their presentations and the video of the event below.

Referring to the Commission’s presentation of its Competitiveness Progress Report EUREC’s President Rainer Janssen said, “We’re alarmed that overall public and private spending in the EU on clean energy R&D, which includes renewables and hydrogen, has declined in the past ten years. This must be reversed to fight climate change.”

Vice-President Wolfram Sparber said, “We support the approach of the EC’s hydrogen strategy: first decarbonise the current supply of hydrogen, then grow the market for hydrogen by prioritising green hydrogen. Take care upscaling: allow learning-by-doing and R&D to shape electrolyser designs and don’t immediately rush to far bigger units.”

EUREC and DLR are glad to have contributed to the debate around hydrogen. EUREC submitted this paper on electrolysers to the public consultation on the content of the H2020 European Green Deal call, open now.
