We are excited to share the release of the 2019 Annual Activity Report of FOSS, Research Centre for Sustainable Energy. FOSS is a research powerhouse in the field of sustainable energy solutions and in particular photovoltaics, demand side management, energy storage, smart cities and micro/nanogrids, and currently over 40 active research projects, mainly funded by European agencies. The report describes the significant progress we made on all fronts in order to fulfil our mission of engaging with cutting-edge research that has impact and bridge the gap between research and practice to assist in tackling the climate and energy security challenges facing our world.

SmartPV: Winner of the National ‘Energy Globe 2020’ Award!
FOSS, Research Centre for Sustainable Energy, University of Cyprus is delighted to announce that the research project “Smart Net Metering for Promotion and cost-efficient Grid Integration of Photovoltaic Technology” (Acronym: SmartPV) won the “Energy Globe 2020” National Award.
It is a great honour for FOSS, which was the project’s coordinating partner, to have received an Energy Globe Award, as it is considered the ‘most important Award for Sustainability worldwide’. This is the second prestigious prize that the SmartPV project has received post-completion. Last year, SmartPV was the winner of Citizen’s Prize at the LIFE Awards 2019.
SmartPV was a pioneering project which focused on optimising household electricity consumption via smart net-metering and application of dynamic electricity tariffs, having a significant financial and environmental benefits for the energy development of Cyprus.

Webinar: Cost-Effective, Energy Efficiency and High-Tech Renewals
A highly motivating webinar addressing “How can cost-effective energy efficiency and high–tech renewals take place in isolated zones/towns?” was held on 28 July 2020. The project ‘Cost-effective rehabilitation of public buildings into smart and resilient nano-grids using storage’ (Acronym: BERLIN), where FOSS Research Centre for Sustainable Energy is a coordinating partner, was presented in the webinar which was organized by the project ‘Mediterranean University as Catalyst for Eco-Sustainable Renovation’ (Acronym: Med-EcoSuRe). Both projects which are thematically closely related, are funded by the European Union under the ENI CBC Med Programme.

Another Successful Internship Programme has almost come to an end!
FOSS Research Centre for Sustainable Energy, University of Cyprus has been running very inspiring summer internship programmes on an annual basis, providing young, talented students from anywhere around the world with the opportunity to deepen their knowledge by engaging in groundbreaking research.
Putting the safety and wellbeing of our team members and community at the forefront due to the pandemic situation, we selected only four of the brightest students to join our summer 2020 programme; a significantly lower number in comparison to last year where we had eleven students.
