On the 9th of June we organised the public workshop “Strength through Cooperation: Europe’s PV value chain working together”. The three-hour event focused on cooperation across European PV value chain manufacturing and was chaired by Radovan Kopecek (ISC Konstanz) with support from Simon Philipps (FhG-ISE) and Ingrid Weiss (WIP Renewable Energies) and from media partnership PV Tech and Photovoltaics International. The workshop featured speakers and moderators from many manufacturers and EUREC members.
“PV cell and module manufacturing is coming back to Europe, but wafers and glass are needed, too. Supply of these components is becoming a bottleneck,” concluded Radovan Kopecek from the event. A chart from Fraunhofer ISE showed that Europe has twice as much wafer manufacturing capacity today as cell capacity. But the supply of wafers might tighten soon as new cell lines open.
Regarding the advantages of Europe-based production, Kopecek said, “Installers of utility-scale systems will not pay a premium for modules just because they’re made ‘Europe-made’. We need to build top-quality products that attract buyers for their technical merit and other advantages like local and responsive after-sales service.”
