EUREC has long been keen to support measures to promote digitalisation and data sharing in the renewable energy space (i.e. through our Special Issue) and our DG Energy event this past February). We have therefore organised a statement to endorse data-friendly amendments to the upcoming Renewable Energy Directive revision (RED III). MEP Eva Maydell (EPP) and other MEPs in the European Parliament Committee on Industry, Research and Energy (ITRE) have proposed several amendments to the upcoming revision of the Renewable Energy Directive (RED III) centred around support for greater access to data and of creating data sharing frameworks. We believe the amendments mentioned in this statement would be powerful measures for promoting digitalisation and creating a framework for data sharing in the renewable energy industry. The statement calls on the key players in the RED III discussions in the European Parliament to support the amendments mentioned, either ‘stand-alone’ or within Compromise Amendments.
In particular, the statement highlights principles for an effective data sharing framework, namely:
- Agreements for accessing and possibly warehousing data
- Shared data to be of high quality and FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable)
- Driven from the top
The statement has been endorsed by a number of organisations, including the Fraunhofer Group for Energy Technologies and Climate Protection, the International Data Spaces Association, EERA, INESCTEC, the Swiss Wind Energy R&D Network, the Basque Energy Cluster, and many others.
